THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN SECURING OUR CEMETERY AND REPAIRING THE TURNING ANGEL
The Turning Angel is the signature monument of the Natchez City Cemetery, and became an international celebrity when Natchez writer Greg Iles titled a best-selling book in its honor. The angel keeps watch over five rounded tombstones, uniform and in a row, all with the same date of death. These tombstones tell of lives cut short when there was an explosion at the Natchez Drug Company: Luella Booth, 17, Ada White, 19, Mary Worthy, 12, Inez Netterville, 17, and Carrie Murray, 22, all young women who lost their lives in the explosion.
On Tuesday, June 23, 2020 the Turning Angel was heavily damaged when vandals came into the cemetery and pushed her off of her base onto the ground. Thanks to the generous gifts from Natchez City Cemetery supporters, this iconic monument has been restored and enhanced security will be added to the cemetery.
